Meet Jeffrey Boney
Jeffrey L. Boney is a man who exudes confidence and commands respect. He is shrewd yet offers a warm smile when you meet him. Jeff or J. Boney as he’s affectionately called by his closest friends, is an award-winning and accomplished businessman, journalist, media professional, city councilman, philanthropist, community leader, Leadership Houston Class XXVII graduate and former board member, a current and former board member of a host of other national and local organizations, and soon-to-be published author.
The list of Jeff’s accomplishments and affiliations are literally a mile long. Above all of these accolades, what is most important is his family. He has been married to his wife, Sharwin, for over 24 years and is a proud father of 3 children, all currently in college. Jeff is also a proud Charter Line member of the Mu Mu Nu Chapter of his beloved fraternity, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Jeff grew up in South Park and Third Ward, and now lives in the suburb of Missouri City serving as the city councilman for District B. He has been on a mission since walking the halls of Dodson Montessori, Ryan Middle School, Jack Yates Senior High School, University of Oklahoma and Texas Southern University, the crown jewel of the community. In 1997, Jeff’s cousin spoke a powerful message over his life saying, “God wanted me to let you know that He is going to use you and your voice to be a voice to impact the nation and the world.”
Jeff uses his voice to impact the world in numerous ways. He is the founder of the Texas Business Alliance, a statewide business development organization where he established the Youth Entrepreneurship Academy (YEA) program to teach young people between the ages of 14 to 19 how to start businesses in six months or less. As the Associate Editor of the Forward Times, a historic Houston Black-owned newspaper, Jeff continues to use his voice by managing the weekly content and writing the main stories in the paper. He is an exemplary leader, improving the Greater Houston area one day at a time. As president of the Jack Yates National Alumni Association (JYNAA), Jeff was instrumental in helping bring the Maritime Academy to Jack Yates and helped create the George Floyd Scholarship for Social Justice to provide scholarships to deserving Jack Yates students in honor of his fellow fallen Lion, George Floyd.
After a near-death experience from contracting COVID-19 in 2020, Jeff realized he still had so much more to do. He will soon launch his first book entitled, Don’t Argue With Me, where he provides his take on issues impacting the Black community.
Jeff states: “Every day of my life is meant here for a purpose. God has allowed me to remain here for a reason and I believe I'm here to fulfill that purpose.”
Jeff is a man driven to help the city that has given so much to him. Houston is not just home. It’s a place of family, engagement, diversity, culture, and a place where he makes a daily impact.
What else is next for Jeff? He relies on God to direct his path, but also says: “Trust me. It’s gonna be off the chain. Off the hinges. The best is yet to come. So, buckle your seat belt.”
J. Boney, we’re ready for the ride!
