Meet Rocio Rubio

Rocio Rubio

To serve, not to be served. Mark 10:45

Rocio grew up in the City of South Houston with three brothers. Rocio’s parents immigrated from El Salvador and made South Houston their new home. Rocio went to Pasadena ISD schools and later attended the University of Texas at Austin. As a first-generation college student, Rocio’s experience at UT felt difficult to her. Rocio majored in Marketing despite being pressured by educators to pursue Accounting or Finance because they’re generally more financially stable careers. Even during college, Rocio wasn’t interested in monetary gains. She loved Marketing because of its human nature. Figuring out what people need, what appeals to them and how to communicate with people. One of Rocio’s proudest moment is graduating from college. Growing up, she didn’t have anyone in her life to look up to as a role model for graduating college. Rocio wasn’t a legacy. Rocio only knew things about college from movies like Legally Blonde. There were plenty of days where Rocio cried after difficult exams and being away from her family but she is proud she pushed through and graduated college. It will always be one of the most meaningful moment in her life.

When asked what gets her up in the morning, Rocio said working for nonprofits. Rocio is not a morning person. She’s actually notoriously known for going to bed very late. But knowing that going into work helps other people quickly gets her out of bed. Rocio’s professional career post college graduation has been solely focused on nonprofits. Rocio loves to help others and has managed to make that her career. Rocio also volunteers for several organizations ranging from various causes that are dear to her heart. People in her network always go to her with questions and for help because of her community involvement and ability to proactively find answers. Recently, Rocio made the bold decision of running for City Council for the City of South Houston. Rocio ran two years ago but lost and decided to give it another try this year. Anyone that knows Rocio knows that she hates attention and prefers to be in the background keeping things organized. But Rocio thought to herself, “if I don’t do it, then who will? Who will fight for my neighbor’s needs?” So, she gave it another try and is working hard to make her city a better place to live.
